Overview
The L-1 visa allows multinational companies to transfer employees from an overseas office to a U.S. subsidiary or affiliate. L-1A is for executives and managers; L-1B is for employees with specialized knowledge. You must have worked for the overseas affiliate for at least one year within the three years preceding the petition, and take on a role consistent with the overseas assignment. L-1 has no annual quota; L-1A may last up to 7 years and L-1B up to 5. L-1A holders may pursue EB-1C green cards when eligible — a common path for multinational executives.
Eligibility Requirements
- A qualifying corporate relationship between the overseas and U.S. entities
- At least one year of employment with the overseas affiliate within the past three years
